MP Robert Halfon apologies to pupils, parents and teachers of Harlow over exam fiasco
News / Tue 18th Aug 2020 at 12:32pm
THE MP for Harlow Robert Halfon has apologised to “all the Harlow students, parents and teachers” for the mess caused by the government over the school exam results.
Mr Halfon is also the chair of the education committee and pointed out that the committee pointed out (publicly) in early July, their concerns over the marking model that was being used.
Yh quizzed Mr Halfon further on where exactly the buck stopped in this matter?
We also asked him whether what has happened, under a Conservative government, runs contrary to his political beliefs on the ladder of opportunity?
The interview is below.
The "where does the buck stop?" question was very good. RH goes further when speaking to The Guardian, calling for OFQUAL to be scrapped. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/aug/18/senior-tory-mp-robert-halfon-calls-for-abolition-of-ofqual-over-exam-grades-crisis “It is worth considering abolishing Ofqual in its current form, it is not fit for purpose, and bringing it back within the Department for Education. Ministers should have proper control and accountability,” he told the Guardian. While the U-turn over A-Level exams is a complete fiasco, and continues to be as BTEC students are still waiting for answers, it is not the only education related example of incompetence of this government. https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/exclusive-27-academy-trusts-handed-just-1-free-laptop-despite-gavin-williamson-pledge-to-help-disadvantaged_uk_5f3ba21bc5b61100c3ac316d?utm_hp_ref=uk-politics 27 Academy Trusts Given Just ONE Free Laptop Each From Government This government has failed help disadvantaged children during lockdown. This is what "leveling up" really means to this government.
