Old Harlow councillor urges Barclays Bank to change its mind over closure

Business / Mon 28th Sep 2020 at 08:38am

AN Old Harlow councillor has urged Barclays Bank to re-consider its decision to close.

YH spoke to Cllr Joel Charles outside the Station Road bank on Saturday morning.

Customers recently received a letter informing them the bank would be closing on November 27th.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking. As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

“This is reflected at the Harlow, Station Road branch where there has been a 28 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020. In addition, 84 per cent of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.

“We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required.”

Barclays don’t care about their customers, just about the profits they make. They want online banking only.

Maybe the fall in customers is to do with, too few staff at certain times, and more importantly a lot of people are told to go to town centre branch even for simple issues!! Why not use the old town branch as any other? As a bank, cover all aspects and the customers will return. They purposely run the branch down to close it eventually, saving them money!!!

With the banks keep closing they are making it harder for people to access their monies ,if that is the case employers should give people the choice of pay packets or bank then its is our choice whether to use the banks or not

It is very important to have a local branch of Barclays in Old Harlow. It is used by a lot of older people who have no way of getting into Harlow. Also, we use this Bank for business and set up the account up about 4 years ago, and living in Sheering, it is close by. Some of the transactions are quite large.. Very time consuming to have to go into a busy town. I am sure if a Petition was set up you would realise how important it is for this Branch to stay open, even with a skeleton staff.

Closing this branch and advising us to go to Harlow, Epping , Bishop Stortford, is asking us to u se our cars more which is not ecologically good. There are a lot of elderly people in Old Harlow who are not happy using technology. The staff in the bank have always been happy to help and advise. There have been constant queues during this virus period, evidence of the public need. I imagine the sale of the building is in process already. Joan Jones
