HARLOW Foodbank support nearly 400 children to have healthy meals in October Half-term holidays

LAST week Harlow Council allocated £10,000 to Harlow Foodbank to ensure that children in receipt of Free School Meals got support over half term.

Here is their report

We had three challenges!

Firstly – making sure that parents knew that it was available,

Secondly – making sure that we got details of as many who wanted help – at short notice

Thirdly – making sure we got food parcels prepared and out to families that needed them as quickly as possible.

We are incredibly grateful to all those that made this happen so efficiently! With most of the numbers in, nearly 400 children from 169 families have been helped.

How we did it….

All agencies in the town were told that they could write vouchers for any of their clients who are on free school meals. We know that many schools passed this message on to parents.

We publicised the opportunity on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, suggesting 3 ways to contact us: phone, text and DM.

The response was amazing! Harlow neighbours passed on the message!

Our Facebook posts were shared 1,300 times.

In total 67,300 saw the posts and 6,800 engaged with them.

Our volunteers came into the Store House and to St Paul’s distribution centre to ensure that nutritionally balanced family boxes were packed, picked up or delivered to families that couldn’t get out.

The result!?

It was clear how relieved recipients were that help had come their way. There were some tears of gratitude but most of all sheer relief that there was less pressure on parents experiencing hardship at a time when everyone needed a break.

Again, we cannot say how grateful we are to all those who stepped up to help their neighbours last week. The impact was more than just the amount of food taken home: it was the sign of good will and support that came with it. As one tearful recipient commented: “I just can’t believe how kind people are”.

SO finally, from us to all our supporters – thanks for helping us do our bit to restore people’s faith in each other.

Brilliant. Shame that the government won't help but prefers impoverished children to starve.
