Help to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Harlow’s 75th birthday

Harlow is 70: Why I Came Here / Fri 25th Mar 2022 pm31 05:51pm

AS we move well into 2022 there’s many things that we can look forward to and there’s two significant events this year that Harlow Council will be helping the Harlow community to celebrate – The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Harlow’s 75th birthday.

Harlow Council is designing a programme of events to mark both of these milestone occasions, in a year that people can celebrate together again. More details will be released in the coming weeks.

On 6 February 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service. To celebrate this anniversary, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year across the country, culminating in a four day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

Today (25 March 2022) it was 75 years ago Harlow was designated a New Town. In the same year of 1947, Sir Frederick Gibberd was appointed architect-planner to draw up the new town masterplan which was approved a year later in 1948.

It was just over 10 years after the birth of the new town that The Queen and Prince Philip came to Harlow in October 1957 and visited Hughs Tower, The Hides and the newly-built town centre. Elizabeth Way was also officially opened. As part of this year of celebrations the council is looking at ways it can celebrate the anniversary of The Queen’s visit.

Funding for your event

If you are running a project, activity or event you can apply for funding from the Harlow Civic Pride Community Fund. This can provide funding from £50 up to £500.

The fund was originally set-up by the council following Harlow’s 70 birthday in 2017.
