Letter to Editor: Wonderful to see world class cycling come to Harlow

Dear Sir,
I have recently completed my third Ride London 100 and was delighted to see the race come to Essex.
Despite a lot of negativity towards the event, it was heartening to see so many people by the side of the road cheering the riders on and embracing the event.
When the announcement that the women’s tour of Britain was coming to Harlow, I was delighted to see such a high profile event coming to Harlow and given some of the recent events in Harlow it was a genuine good news story
Despite a lot of negative comments from people, particularly complaining about the road closures which for the majority had a minor impact, it was extremely heartening to see the town embrace the event with the number of people out at the roadside and at the finish and in particular children who will hopefully be inspired by seeing such an event and could be Harlow’s next Laura Kenny.
Chapeau Harlow Council for pulling off such a coup, next stop a bid for the Men’s Tour of Britain.
Yours sincerely

If holding events like this get the potholes fixed then I am all for it. Maybe we could map a route round all the worst roads in Harlow.( I had noticed potholes were fixed on this race route and last weeks ride London)
Be nice if the cycle tracks were first class too. They need to be extended, joined in a continuous system, well maintained, lit and covered by CCTV and secure bike boxes for parking installed everywhere. Pot holes, being forced onto busy roads and getting your bike or parts stolen are big disincentives to get people to switch.
We used to have a cycling velodrome in the town which disappeared under a Labour controlled council in order to facilitate Longmans building.
Not to mention, the Olympic size swimming pool with diving board, world class sports Center and athletics track ,ski slope and the Square. All of which has been turned into housing for people who moved to Harlow because of all the fun stuff we once had. Goose and golden eggs come to mind.
