Cricket: Harlow’s cartoon cricketers of 1957

History / Sun 21st Jan 2024 at 09:02am

AS PART of the celebrations surrounding Harlow Cricket Club’s 250th anniversary, club president, Alan Howick has been into the archive of the Harlow papers to find past reports.

============

IN 1953, we saw the launch of Harlow’s very own newspaper the Harlow Citizen. Local news, local journalists, locally printed. The coverage was terrific, they caught and reported every story going around and always a feel-good factor after reading each Friday edition.

Throughout the 1950’s and on to the 1970’s the sports coverage was excellent.

Three, maybe four pages of local matches, whether it be football or cricket. Junior or senior, they were all covered. The first sports editor being Ken Cook, who loved his cricket (as well as other games including soccer) and his weekly article ‘Talking Sport…by Ken Cook’ was a joy to read.

He was chatting to you through your ‘minds ear’ and in support during the 1950’s  was a fascinating somewhat unique feature of a series of cartoon characters (by Jimmy Brown, who was he?) being a delight and added to the accompanying match report.
