LITTLE ones who have lost someone special to them are invited to come along to St Clare Hospice for a morning of crafts, games and activities designed to support bereaved children.

The end-of-life care charity, based in Hastingwood, is hosting its second Storytime Picnic on Thursday 4th April following the success of 2023’s inaugural event inspired by the children’s book, The Rabbit Listened.

This year, the free event for 4- to 6-year-olds is based on the story, I Can’t Believe They’re Gone, the gentle tale of the Mouse family and their empathic companion, Bear, who helps them to navigate the complex emotions of grief.

Between 10am and 1pm, there will be a range of fun games and activities on offer, including creating hand drums, decorating cupcakes and a treasure hunt, led by St Clare’s Patient and Family Support team.

St Clare Hospice project manager Chloe Rich said: “We’re so pleased that our Storytime Picnic is returning again this Spring, offering light touch bereavement support through fun, hands-on activities and play for young children who have been impacted by the death of someone close to them.

“This time, we’ve chosen Karen Brough’s book, I Can’t Believe They’re Gone, a beautifully-written story with heart that aims to help children understand the stages of their grief and the common feelings they might be experiencing, as well as meaningful ways to honour the memory of their loved ones.

“If your child is coping with loss, then please know that St Clare Hospice is here for you and the little people in your life. We all express our emotions in our own unique way and our Storytime Picnic is specially designed to support children to explore how they are feeling and help them understand that they are not alone, as well as showing show them that healing and hope are possible after someone we know has died.”

The Storytime Picnic is free to attend, but places are limited so booking is essential. No previous connection to the Hospice is required to attend. Parents/carers are not required to stay for the session and a packed lunch must be provided.
