Harlow Changing Places opens in the Harvey Centre

Entertainment / Fri 12th Apr 2024 at 07:25am

A NEW Changing Places facility opened this week at The Harvey Centre. Harlow Town Council have made significant investment into this pivotal development which addresses the longstanding need for better provision for people living with disabilities.

Whilst standard accessible toilets meet the needs of some disabled people, over 230,000 people in the UK need personal assistance to use the toilet or change continence pads, including people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, spinal injuries and people living with stroke. Changing Places facilities offer a solution to this.

A Changing Places toilet provides sanitary accommodation for people with multiple and complex disabilities who have one or two assistants with them. They are larger facilities with equipment including a height adjustable changing bench and wash basin, a hoist, privacy screen and shower.

This initiative will play a key role in making The Harvey Centre a more welcoming place for people living with disabilities.

In addition to the Changing Places facility, The Harvey Centre also recently opened a new and improved parent and baby room featuring a new feeding chair and bottle warmer along with a new play section for little ones.

Bryan Young, Centre Manager, The Harvey Centre says, We are delighted that this vital unit has been put in place and we hope this can help play a role in making Harlow a more accessible shopping destination for people living with disabilities of all kinds. We are committed to meeting the needs of our shoppers and this initiative is a huge step in reaching our goal of making The Harvey Centre accessible for all.’’

To use these facilities do you need to show any form of ID to show you are disabled? I ask as my son is doubley incontinent but to look at him he looks as if he has no problems - also - the shower - are towels available to use or do you have to travel with your own towels?

Hi there, No ID is required, we will not question anyone requesting to use the Changing Places facility, however any larger groups etc we will come along and have a conversation with to ensure they are not misused. We do not provide towels.
