THE highest ever percentage of Essex parents are being offered a place for their child at one of their preferred of primary schools this year.

Almost 16,000 parents and carers across the county will find out the outcome of their primary school applications today (Tuesday 16 April).

This year, Essex County Council received a total of 15,862 primary school applications.

Of these, 14,477 pupils who are due to start in Reception in September 2024 have been offered their parent or carer’s first preference of primary school.

This is 91.27% of the total cohort and is an increase on the 90.78% who obtained their first preference last year.

It is also the highest percentage of first preference offers in Essex since admissions have been fully co-ordinated.

Another 5.54 per cent of children were offered their parents’ second preference of school. This means 96.81% of parents have been offered their first or second preference, another record high percentage in Essex.

In total, 98.61% of parents have been offered one of their named preferences of primary school, the highest percentage ever in Essex.

A spokesperson for Essex County Council said: “We are delighted that we’ve been able to offer a higher percentage of parents one of their named preferences of primary school than ever before. This includes also offering a higher percentage of parents their first preference than ever before as well.

“Starting school for the first time is a hugely important milestone in any child’s life. We wish all children in Essex starting their academic journeys in September every success.

“We continue to invest in creating additional primary school capacity so that as many parents and carers as possible receive their preference of school for their child.”

Those who applied online will receive confirmation by email or by visiting the Essex County Council website.
