Ward by ward: The Conservatives’ past, present and future may well all lay in Great Parndon

Elections / Wed 24th Apr 2024 at 04:25pm

THIS won’t take long. A safe Conservative ward and even taking into account that this may well be a tricky year for the Tories, they should retain this ward.

The most controversial issue that happened in this ward over the last few years was the “low profile” of the Conservative councillor, Steve LeMay. We got the feeling that being a successful businessman is not necessarily a transferable skill and Mr LeMay got a wee bit frustrated by the whole process.

It happens. It happens to all parties. Thankfully, it is very rare. There should be a better attendance rule but this is for local government to decree.

But let us focus on the positive. This ward has one of the best ambassadors for local government that we have known in David Carter. He works so hard and gives 100% for his residents. He is such as well known face in the ward an hugely respected.

Hannah Ellis is stand in this ward for the first time. If she gets in, she may well learn a lot from Mr Carter. You may be hearing more about Ms Ellis in the coming months.

Despite putting up three paper candidates, Labour, with an eye on the General Election, will be keen to see whether the Tory vote stays at home or not.

We have the utmost respect for the leader of the Harlow Alliance Party (HAP) Nick Taylor and he willl hope to get over 200 votes. They play a vital part in our system of accountability and scrutiny.

Labour still haven't explained how they will meet their 100 day pledge on the alleged financial issues within the council. I don't really know if they actually think there are issues or if this is all they could think of. The Alliance party obviously can't form an administration but they can provide some very useful and effective input to the younger councillors (Dan, put your hand down ) and work to the benefit of the town, not a national party. They would get my vote!

Well although I don't agree with much of Cllr Carters politics there is no doubt that he has a high profile in the Ward. He has had to of course because Cllr Lemay has not participated in any council meetings since 2022 or represented residents on any outside bodies. I understand that Hannah Ellis is employed as an adviser to the Conservative Government and look where that has got us! As for Cllr Saggers, he has clearly deserted residents in the Mark Hall Ward because the Conservative Party think he could loose his seat there and has become a candidate in Great Parndon in the hope that he remains a councillor.

No mention of the Greens which is hardly surprising in this ward. Michael Casey is absolutely correct to highlight the hard work of Conservative councillor David Carter. Nicholas Taylor of HAP got 262 votes in 2021 in this ward, so really should be cruising to 300+ votes if the Steve LeMay disappearing act is having any effect. I completely agree that David Carter is a great asset to the Great Parndon Ward, he is approachable and cares deeply about the issues brought to his attention. Overall I think Conservatives should retain this Ward.

Call Saggers, Will you be on the case to Essex council about the state of the roads and footpaths in your new constituency. You left ours in a very sorry state with some questions still to be asked as to who was accountable for signing off the works as acceptable

One of the best things I have ever done is get David Carter to stand for Council. So thank you Patrick McClarnon for the introduction, because over 20 years later he is one of our best! I don't know anything about Hannah as we've not been introduced. But Matthew Saggers has deserted Mark Hall in the same way Dan Swords and Mike Hardware have deserted Bush Fair and Staple Tye for Church Langley. In my blue days we said Labour Councillors doing this were on the "chicken run"! How ironic it's now the Tories doing it! Mark Gough -Leader Harlow UKIP
