EIGHT students in Year 13 at St Mark’s West Essex Catholic School have recently been awarded with top grades in their final debating assessment.

Having spent months honing their public speaking skills, use of rhetoric and formal debating etiquette, the eight students confidently took to the floor to contest different views about state secularism – a complex and sensitive topic for any confident debater to handle, but especially so under the pressure of the debate being the students’ final assessed piece with the English Speaking Board. The debate was a riveting and fast-paced exchange, with arguments being well-researched and students confident in tackling counters to their points of view with fluency and expertise.

Students received glowing feedback from the examination board, with six distinctions and two merits awarded between them (with distinctions being the highest grade possible to attain). They should be incredibly proud of how their debating skills have developed over the course of the year and of their fantastic grades, and we hope to see them continuing their debating careers as they move onto university societies next year.
