Review: Harlow Community Arts Festival: ‘This Summer’ by Severn Wonders Productions

Entertainment / Wed 15th May 2024 at 04:41pm

THE first ever Harlow Community Arts Festival opened with This Summer by Severn Wonders Production.

The Harlow Playhouse Practitioners Programme presents the Harlow Community Arts Festival. Six emerging theatre companies from the local or surrounding area showcase new-writing, all on the brief of ‘Community’.

It is very brave for a young actor to present a 45-minute monologue in front of an audience but the actor painted a very vivid picture of a right-of-passage weekend away in Barcelona.

We follow his summer as he falls in love, loses it, learns about himself and those around him.

This reviewer enjoyed watching the actor as he used the whole space and developed his own character as well as the others. He really did develop Tilly and Delilah very well.

The was a very good script. A few cracking jokes, especially one about kebabs. He certainly kept the audience laughing. Excellent movement and timing.

The performance also went through the gears really well. In fact the best parts were the moments of melancholia. Excellent use of lighting.

We weren’t sure of the ending. It sounded a bit dated. A bit Killing of Georgie.

We would also have made the geographical locations (Barcelona and Soho) more relatable.

Plus, we weren’t sure this play needed an F word every thirty seconds.

But it is important to put this in perspective. These are young actors, writers and producers making their way in the world of theatre and so on this occasion, all the basics and all the disciplines were there.

It was expertly directed, lit, produced, really well acted and held our attention throughout.

This reviewer works at the Edinburgh Festival, the world’s largest arts festival. So you held my attention and believe me, that doesn’t aways happen up there.

However, we do have two work experience students who will also be reviewing, so we look forward to their input.

Overall Rating: 4 Stars

I also saw this play with a friend we both really loved it. It takes a lot of nerve to stand up on your own and perform like that. The young actor put his all into this performance it was very impressive though the parts where they played music were a bit distracting. But overall a great performance... We plan to watch some more.
