Letter to Editor: Labour councillor slams Tory-run council over housing and state of town centre

“Dear Editor,
AROUND the time of the May 2024 Harlow Council elections, the leader of the council stood on Broad Walk in the town centre and promised work would begin in the area if the Tories were returned to power.

Adjacent to Broad Walk is the East Gate development and six months on the shop fronts have been vandalised and used as a meeting point, and possible residence, for many people. I myself have been waved at from upstairs windows while walking past early one morning.

Whatever happened to this administration’s promise to “get tough” on the developers? If anything things have got even worse and with the afternoons and evenings drawing in you can understand my concern about those working in the area.
Problems like this don’t happen in a vacuum and the lack of adequate social housing in Harlow needs to be urgently addressed, but what do we see instead? Most of the Burnt Mills flats, when they finally open, will be available as affordable and market rents only, which will do doubt come as a comfort to those on the housing waiting list, a great many of whom are on the list precisely because they can’t afford “affordable” rents.
Add to this the Tory administration’s ludicrously low estimation of homelessness in the town and undeveloped sites left to rot and it’s difficult to escape the feeling that they have lost control.

The leader may have a clock counting down to the next Council elections but his problems are rising even faster than his bank balance after the recent hefty pay rise that he voted for himself to have.
Jodi Dunne, Bush Fair Labour and Co Operative Councillor and Shadow Portfolio Holder for Housing.”
well said Jodie broad walk is a mess
Pointless letters purely aimed at political point scoring between Labour and the Conservatives, Harlow Residents deserve so much more, Funny how Jodi has a pop at Dan's bank balance but conveniently forgets the other huge increased allowances including their own party leaders increase from £2080 to an eye watering £11,200
Well said Peter Lamb. Words are just words. I have always said the Town centre as an example is run down and not an engaging place to wander but things are changing, it is not an overnight success it will take years to undo what the last labour council created, Chris Vince wasted millions and lined pockets of architects and legal bods on failed building projects like the Staple Tye Lister med centre which this council has now got it up and running as it is doing with the town centre, it will take time as long as this despicable government allows the £20m refurb to continue. I do not have the faith this will continue.
We really shouldn't listen too carefully to Labour's shadow Housing portfolio holder when he can't even work out how the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies to the Council's housing stock. I expect someone will give him a clue on that score soon.
Mentioning coherence and consistency in the same sentence with Cllr Jodi Dunne is indeed laughable. He and his colleagues failed to build any Council houses in over a decade, wasted £ fortunes on consultants on failed projects such as Lister House and did nothing...absolutely nothing on Town Centre regeneration. They are both clueless and an embarrassment to this town.
How could anyone listen to what labour says, (other than Labour Party supporters) when they were running the council, we had council tax rises tear in year out, and even turned the street lights out, causing problems for the workers who worked in the nighttime economy, what did they actually do whilst in charge? I’m struggling to think of anything worth while, so when we voted in the conservatives you can actually see change happening, slowly but surely, so at least give them a chance, the neglect they were left with will take time, (Rome wasn’t built in a day) renewal has to start from the ground up, but I believe they will get there, Harlow does cover quite a big area.
Jodi Dunne talks of increase in Councillors allowances, which had been frozen for years and were recommended by an independent body. Labour councillors all voted against it, yet how many have refused to accept it???? As has been pointed out , the biggest increase went to the Labour leader - 438% increase!!! Come on Jodi, cut out the blantant hypocrisy and put the money where your mouth is: refuse the increase or donate it to a charity! That will be the day!
Less Demolition Dan and more Bob the Builder would be ideal. Why not finish some projects before starting new ones.
