Harlow councillor in charge of the garden town project welcomes big decision on Gilston

News / Fri 10th Jan 2025 at 03:59pm

THE PORTFOLIO holder for Garden Town and Planning has welcomed the news that planning permission has been given for 10,000 homes in Gilston.

Councillor Alasdair Gunn said: “I am pleased the Section 106 for Gilston has been agreed, as this will secure investment to Harlow and the surrounding area.

“What’s been agreed will lead to new schools and healthcare facilities. The large amount of employment space will create job opportunities and boost the local economy.

“New, modern sports facilities including a dedicated football hub and leisure centre will all be easy to get to from Harlow, and open to our residents.

“This also means more money going into our road and transport network, which will be critical if we are to keep Harlow moving as it grows.

“A lot of hard – at times difficult – work has gone into this, including from the team here at Harlow Council. I would like to thank all those who have worked together to ensure a good outcome for Harlow.”

Hospital ? Healthcare facilities? Infrastructure built before homes? I doubt it. This article just shows how tone deaf and disinterested in local impact these people are

No thought given to the impact the development will have on the town. No new infrastructure, including most importantly the new hospital. How can they justify building these homes and piling even more pressure on Princess Alexandra hospital, which can barely cope as it is. More traffic to add to the 90% Gridlock we currently have on a daily basis. Hardly any affordable (if any at all) new homes in the development. Loss of farmland and green spaces, Decimation of the River Stort area with the new flyover. No one has listened to the people in the town, the powers that be have just steamrollered the whole thing through with a pointless public consultation that was just a public relations exercise. Still, we'll have what the powers that be want, and that's a concrete jungle from London to Cambridge, once the Latton Priory development gets the green light, plus the developments to the East of the town. Sheer madness!!

Why would he not welcome this? It means he gets to keep his job. Wake up everybody!

I am sure he will be well chuffed when a load of people on council waiting lists who still will not be able to afford to rent one of these rabbit hutches set up camp outside his house.Stop pricing people out of housing it is a basic human right.

What an absolute joke, utter madness. They aren’t going put anymore infrastructure in, plus no new hospital. We live in Eastwick Lane, Eastwick and they can’t even keep the road to our properties in good driveable order. Who is going to benefit from this, outside residents, big companies, councillors and many more who have their fingers in the pot of plenty.

The origen of Council housing was not that of socialists or the Labour Party, it was created by farm, mine and industrial owners to retain staff in their businesses. The Labour Party expanded this after the second World War so unlike the end of the first world war soldiers came home to homes fit for heroes and not heroes fit for homes. If you price out workers you will have to pay higher wages, which will cause higher inflation and thus less jobs.

I note my comments were removed. Surely you are not following the Council and ignoring the many because you don't like their point of view

I would like an answer to one question from Councillor Alasdair Gunn: Are Mr. David Sprunt and the Conservative-run Essex County Council Highways department breaching the 2020 Harlow Local Development Plan? Which states,” A development must meet the following criteria:”(a) it would not cause a severe residual cumulative impact on highway congestion and movement.
