Cyclist sustains broken leg after being struck down by hit and run driver in Potter Street

Crime / Sun 1st Jun 2025 at 06:28pm

ESSEX Police have launched an investigation after a car driver crashed into a cyclist and then drove away, leaving him on the road with a broken leg.

Paul King was cycling down Church Road in Potter Street on Saturday afternoon (2.45pm), when what appeared to be a BMW car (Grey/Black) came the other way.

It came into contact with Mr King, breaking his leg and shattering his bike.

A member of St Mary Magdalene Church was nearby. She checked on Mr King who lay in agony in the middle of the road, before contacting the emergency services.

Three police vehicles and an east of England ambulance attended soon after.

He was conveyed to Princess Alexandra Hospital where it was confirmed that his leg was broken.

Police started their investigation, going door to door to see if any residents had any CCTV footage.

One residents’ CCTV footage picked up a car, (matching that description), driving at speed down Church Road, past Chapel Fields before u-turning at the dead end (Latton Street).

We have requested a full statement from Essex Police.

All photos have been published with the consent of Mr King.

The White Horse Pub has 2 cctv cameras on the front which will, if working, almost certainly show the car turning into Church Lane. I hope this driver gets what's coming to them.

This scum bag must be caught. What ever you think of cyclists, we have as much right to be on the road as car uses. Paul, who gives so much to community does not deserve this. To the man who drove this car, you are despicable, and you will eventually be caught, so watch your back.

Jamie G - I am the cyclist involved and gave my express agreement for the picture to be used. It may make other drivers think about their driving habits seeing what pain and suffering bad and dangerous driving causes.
