Memorium: Steve Hulcoop and his remarkable 25 London Marathons
History / Thu 10th Jul 2025 at 04:14pm
WHEN we attended the thanksgiving service for Steve Hulcoop at Potter Street Baptist Church we saw a collection of medals at the front.

We found out that between 1986 and 2012, Steve ran 25 London Marathons.
He ran his first when he was 41 an his last when he was 67.
It sounds like Steve was as eccentric in his running as he was in the rest of his life.

His training methods seemed to be, just put on your training shoes and run.
No running club, no particular running regime, no special diet. Steve just ran.
And when we say training shoes, we got the feeling that in early days, these were more like plimsolls rather than top of the range Nike. But that soon changed.
Steve produced some very impressive times. In 1994, he ran 3 hrs and 49 minutes. That is swift.

We are not sure he could run it standing on his head but BBC filmed him at the end of the 2004 London Marathon, standing on his head!

On every occasion, Steve raised money for a host of charities related to homelessness including Streets2Homes, Housing Justice and Crisis.
So it was very appropriate that one of the readings was Hebrews 12 Verses 1-3.
May he rest in peace.

If you know of a Harlow resident who has run more than 25 London Marathons, then please let us know.
