Prime Minister set to announce UK-wide Digital ID scheme
Crime / Fri 26th Sep 2025 at 06:11am

THE UK prime minister is expected to announce plans for a UK-wide digital ID scheme today reports the BBC.
The initiative, which would be mandatory for adults in the UK, would enable digital checks on people’s right to live and work in the country.
Keir Starmer believes this could help tackle illegal working, saying digital ID is an “enormous opportunity” to “make our borders more secure”.
But critics have already spoken out ahead of his announcement, accusing the government of trespassing on people’s privacy and saying the scheme would be ineffective against illegal migration.
More follows.
Papiere Bitte, I have a driving licence, Passport, NI number and will not have another of Starmers schemes that are more than likely to fail and will be unenforceable anyhow, i know people that i can work for and get paid in cash, you will never stop the black economy.
When many still live in food and energy poverty this misguided government believes spending billions on a card that will be abused and copied is a must. What a useless and pathetic way to address the real problems people are having to deal with today. Burnham and Khan have it right: Starmer is a Tory wearing a red rose. He should just resign now before he is kicked out.
Absolutely appalling infringement of civil liberties. This is the same government which recently lost 180000 names of people who helped us in Afghan. This will be abused and used to control you in ways you never considered. It will be poorly implemented and easily to be hacked - wait until your "dead" as the system says you are. This is a slippery slope if you resist anything this needs to be resisted. It will not help with address the issues we face. One last thing you cannot trust anything the government says remember how they lied in covid and they lied to create the iraq war, it was not in their manifesto they have no mandate for this except a weak prime minister who it seems is hated by those on the left and right.
Adam, how does an ID card control someone? Why do I have The Twilight theme tune in my head now?
I WILL NOT COMPLY
Mr George -you will need it for everything from travel, to buying fuel and food eventually. It will soon be used like the Chinese system, it is a slippery slope and government cannot be trusted.
I will not comply...no one voted for this MP Vince
Adam, with due respect, that's far fetched. They've had ID cards in Italy, France. Do they need them to buy fuel? Food?
Excellent points, Adam, to which I would add the following. During PM Blair's and PM Brown's Labour governments of 2007, Privacy International (PI) black listed UK as "an Endemic Surveillance Society." UK was shamefully placed in the worst surveillance and intrusion category, alongside Soviet Russia, Singapore, China and the US. The reasons given for this classification was due to UK's millions of surveillance cameras, ID card plans and lack of government accountability. Simon Davies, director of PI, said the loss this year [2007] of computer discs containing personal and bank details of 25 million UK families claiming child benefit highlighted the risks of storing information on huge government databases. The report concludes that the 2007 rankings "showed an increasing trend to archive data on the geographic, communications and financial records of all their citizens and residents. This trend leads to the conclusion that all citizens, regardless of legal status, are under suspicion."
PM Starmer's announcement regarding his intention of introducing mandatory digital ID, means that the 2007 conditions criticised by Privacy International are replicated in 2025. I strongly oppose this intrusion into our privacy and erosion of our freedom. The Great Generation, including my parents, did not fight for, and win our freedom during WW2, in order for a UK Prime Minister to jeopardise it 79 years later. Shame on you, Keir Starmer.
1,491,285 people have now signed a petition which states, "We demand that the UK Government immediately commits to not introducing digital ID cards". Over one million signatures have been added to this petition today. I am posting a link to this petition below. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/730194
I don't think it's that big a deal, we already have a ton of ID, emails are not private, have the ability to track phones/read them and are already being watched with cameras everywhere and now rolling out facial recognition etc. I just don't see the point, it won't work as intended and it's an expense this country could do without. Going by our gov's track record on things like PPE it will end up costing so much more than it should due to sticky MP fingers in the pie.
I have no problem with ID cards as I have nothing to hide. But many European countries have them and it has not made a blind bit of difference.
Reminds me of the movie Brazil
Mr George - your trust in government is naïve, the labour party, lied about WMD in Iraq and killed a million people. A digital ID will be tagged to everything you do and it will be used to "nudge" behaviour. Think carbon credits which limit travel, or maybe limiting purchasing of meat. Who knows say somehting they do not like on social media which needs digital ID to acess and your bank account gets frozen. China does a lot of this and our government would love to do similar. The difference for you saying you have nothing to hide is today you may not but you have no idea how future governments will use them. Europe has ID cards not digital ID - the one country that has digital ID had its database hacked. One more thing to mention this is being pushed by TB institute and his son runs the company who will be getting the contract to implement it.
Adam, Twilight Zone theme tune is back in my head again. Ah, a million 'what if's' based on paranoia? What has Iraq war got to do with ID cards? Do you think Labour are the only party to have lied to its people? I notice you never complain about any other party than Labour. Anyway, I digress, we have more akin to France, Italy etc in our way of life, we are not China and nothing I can see in the British way of life will ever lend itself to being like China.. Europe ID cards are digital, the paper card has been or is being replaced.
Ps, Adam, when I say about sticky fingers by MP's, where does that scream 'trust in government' btw? All governments for the last 16 years at least have been utterly inept.
Starmer is an idiot if he thinks people can't see what he's upto. By putting in yet another stupid idea, he hopes no one will notice the smash the gangs has failed as has the one in one out scheme has failed. Currently the petition against this is at 2.2 million. He can't even lie straight. He said the card will include passport, driving licence, national insurance, photograph etc and it will be free. However, the government currently takes from us £14 for every single online driving licence renewal and £94.50 for an online passport renewal. Is Starmer really telling us that the government is prepared to lose all of that renewal funding to give us free cards instead? Then you have an issue of operation, the government won't run the scheme, it will be farmed out to one of thier buddies who will have poor digital security and we will be advised 3 months AFTER a breach has occured. Starmer is way out of his depth and the country is in decline.
