HARLOW MP Chris Vince MP responds to PM’s speech: Our community is about hope, not division

Mr Vince said: “What struck me most about the Prime Minister’s speech was not the policy announcements about gold-standard apprenticeships, further investment in our further education colleges, or even his personal vision to renew and unite our country, but the part of the speech where he spoke about all the different community champions he had met from across the country during his first year as PM.

Because in every single case, he could have easily been talking about Harlow.

Our town has community leaders and champions in huge numbers. In fact, Harlow probably has more than its fair share.

I know, because I’ve met them.

From Tess, Cassie and Lynn, who run dementia clubs to support the most vulnerable in our town and those who care for them.

To Jason, who runs the workshop at Rainbow Services, giving young people who may otherwise be written off the skills they need for the future.

To Steve and Adam, who run the recovery café in the Playhouse, ensuring that whatever challenges you have faced, you can be supported.

To Kerrie and all my former colleagues at Streets2Homes, supporting those when they need it most.

To Rev. Jokey and others like her, who supported so many during the pandemic.

To Herty and Efua, who bring our diverse community to life with food and fun.

And many, many more.

When the Prime Minister talks about investing in our future to create a Britain that is safer and more secure, founded on respect, and providing opportunity, he is talking about communities like ours.

I’ve set out the investment this Labour government has made in just one year. I know there is more to come, I know there is much more to do, but every day I am proud to represent this caring, diverse, and above all kind community.”

But as your government keeps moving immigration policy further to the right to accommodate Reform's agenda you are cementing the climate of fear in the ethnic communities of Britain. Maybe, you could have shown your own commitment to diversity by joining the march around the town centre with the More in Common banner. You turned up at the end and didn't even get included in the pictures. Statements on diversity require local interaction, not just yet another opportunity to agree with Keir Starmer. My ethnically diverse household does not trust your government and we don't have faith in your approach to the issue.

Was anyone impressed by Mr Starmer, apart from MP Vince, in this town? Policy-lite, grand standing on nonsense while people need vital help to put food on their table and help paying over inflated energy bills. Mr Starmer like Mr Farage are playing lousy political games with peoples' lives and failing them badly. Would you vote for either of them? Me neither.

As for community leaders could I include Reverend Alison Taylor in Potter Street.

Gary reminded me. Could we also include the community leader Reverend Christian Okeke at At James' church in Staple Tye. Not only has he done wonderful work on bereavement issues, but he is also one of the chaplains at Princess Alexandra Hospital. During Covid he was at the hospital every day to comfort the dying and grieving relatives. He is one of those wonderful people who has come from the Commonwealth countries and served our community with compassion, diligence and integrity. Patriotism is about service to our communities.

Already, not even 24hrs after his comments to the Labour Party conference, the Prime Minister is backtracking on his use of the utterly baseless "racist" label stating he doesn't see Mr Farage or Reform members as racist. How nice of him(!), but can this hopeless Prime Minister hold to any view for longer than one news cycle? Great Britain is a compassionate country but to continue being so, we have to be rational, ensuring that our communities and economy are put back on a stable footing for the future. Welcoming the brightest and best and addressing critical skills shortages is essential, but with debt at over 100% of GDP, our schools crumbling for want of cash, a 7m strong NHS waiting list and public services teetering under the added demand of unchecked immigration, we simply cannot go on as we are. In its heart Labour is in denial and doesn't want to act and its hot air this week is designed to change very little. This is not an issue of race as the PM has so appallingly suggested, its about ensuring a future British government can better address the needs of the people it exists to serve. Its also about restoring the country's health so we can continue to play a compassionate part in the world. If we do not act, our country's economic problems will deepen and Labour's planned November tax rises will become the norm for for the already hard-pressed British people.

I found Starmer and Lammies comments quite worrying. It's always been known that as far as the left and far left are concerned, if you don't agree with them then you are a racist, islamaphobe, sexist, misogynist etc. All used to try and shut down debate that labour doesn't wan't to talk about. It had whiffs of the Charlie Kirk situation where democrat politicians stirred up the far left crazies and we know what happened then. For so many of labours front bench to have adopted this style of attack is setting a new low by our mp's in government. As to the conference itself, it became very clear very quickly that the Labour party now, are nothing like the labour party we expected. Change has seen labour in the continual mess they are in and that's reflected in thier decisions.

Seamus, Starmer is so not far left, goodness me. He's barely left at all.

So Chris Vince . If your agreeing with your wonderful leader , are you saying that anyone in Harlow who vote Reform are racist. And all what Starmer said Labour would do is what he said when he got in power 14 months ago. By my reckoning he has done nothing to improve the country, he's made it even worse . So what he is actually promising is to get us back to square one. Get labour out , they are all useless.

This is the governments fault they have created the division in this country. They are not fit to govern.
