Hertfordshire Council resume removal of unauthorised flags from lampposts following hundreds of requests from residents

HERTFORDSHIRE County Council has resumed the removal of unauthorised flags from lampposts after more than 600 requests pressing for them to be taken down reports the Stortford Indie.
The authority paused the operation after staff were abused and threatened in the midst of Operation Raise the Colours, a campaign to display the Cross of St George and the Union Jack.

While the masked men hoisting the flags claim to be patriots, many residents have felt intimidated by their nationalism and anti-immigrant stance.
Director of highways and strategic operations Tony Boucher updated elected members in an email on Tuesday (September 30).
He said: “Since we started seeing flags going up around the county in August, we have made it clear in public statements that we support the right of individuals and organisations to fly these flags on their own property. We too fly them outside our main offices and other key buildings, such as fire stations.
“However, to ensure public safety, we have a longstanding policy of not allowing any items to be attached to lampposts and other street fixtures we are responsible for without our permission.
“Our approach has been for our highway teams to remove unauthorised flags and other items as part of their day-to-day work looking after Hertfordshire’s roads.”
Mr Boucher said: “Sadly, when our crews began to take flags down earlier in the month, there were instances of abuse and threatening behaviour by some members of the public.
“It is completely unacceptable that our front-line workers were subjected to this sort of behaviour for simply doing their jobs, and we paused further removal of flags while we considered the best, most efficient and safest way of doing it.”
He told councillors his team had received more than 600 requests to remove the flags and, following further discussions, the authority had resumed its removal operation.
Mr Boucher was clear: “This work will be carried out in a way that is proportionate, avoids unnecessary escalation and focuses on safety-led operational decisions.
“It goes without saying that we will not tolerate any abuse directed towards our front-line colleagues.”

Time for the disrespectful, half-mast flags on lampposts to come down in Harlow. It's no way to fly our flags.
Just goes to show the people who put these flags up are nothing more than anti immigrant thugs, I don't suppose demo dan swords will follow suit
Another attack on a religious setting in Manchester , farage is so to blame for this with his hatred stoking, I'm all for controlled immigration which is currently +450k but farage wants every foreigner who doesn't have right to remain or a skilled visa out, reform get in and we will end up like the states.
What would be good is if the people who put the flags up knew which way up to fly them, I see so many that are upside-down! They say they "want [their] country back", even though they haven't lost anything and are living in one of the most beautiful, peaceful, tolerant and prosperous nations in the World; but they cannot work out how to fly our national flag...
Tim. Don't be silly. The Manchester attack would have not been Farrage related and it's an incredibly stupid statement you've just made
If you have the time, man power and money to bother to remove the flags - why can’t you use that time, manpower and money to - mend potholes- clear drains and trim the back hedges on country roads ??? I know what I’d prefer you to do !!! 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
600 requests for the flags to be removed but how many thousands who want the flags flying have been ignored?
Absolute Rubbish Everyone Has The Right To Display Their Flags Every Other Country Has The Right To It’s Not Racism It’s Our Country How Can Anyone Feel Intimidated By A Flag ???
Nothing says that they love England than a limp rag, hung upside down and half way up a lamp post. Sigh.
People should be proud to see the St. George’s cross displayed. Whether it’s half way up or wrong way round. This is England. Be proud of our fore fathers who died for our freedom. Be proud of those who built this country. It’s OK to love England. Don’t listen to those who are miserable and have nothing to do but Moab. Life is too short. Love your country, be proud.
Again thank you Tim Smith for those reasonable remarks towards the Flags and Reform voters. Your clearly a fair minded person. With your level headed debating. Keep up the good work. And by the way Reform won another 5 Councillors seat across the Country last night. So keep up the good work insulting people it's a great tactic for Reform. A big thank you , your very kind.
David, many of the people who are hanging these flags are turning into the very types of people our 'fore fathers' died fighting. Also, if these people declare to love this country so much, the very least have the decency to hang the Union flag the correct way up, get some education! Spraying church walls and anything else white with a red cross is nothing but graffiti, criminal behaviour and it looks awful too. Again, least they can do is make a decent job of it, treat our flags and history with a bit of respect.
STUPID FAR-LEFT HYPOCRITES, I'M SO GLAD THEY NOT RUNNING HARLOW!!!!!!
Flags just like any other sort of collective identity are just used by insecure people to cling to, safety in numbers, like sheep, empty vessels with no spirit, no genuine confidence, just an inflated bruised ego full of bravado and hollow pride.
To the patriots that have hung the Union Flag on the lampposts I am sure you are aware that a distressed Union Flag must never be flown and now many of the flags are beginning to show signs of fraying(distress) so they should be taken down and destroyed. They must not be thrown in the bin or cut up and used as dust cloths . As you patriots, I am sure are well aware, the distressed Union Flag should be either be laid up in a church or other institution or destroyed by fire. It would also be interesting to see if your patriotism lasts until 11 Nov as historically Harlow has one of the lowest Poppy Appeals.
I pressume you mean the waving of the Palestine Flags in protest marches John? It would make sense
Well Seamus, a flag may represent a people and it may be used as a rallying call to bring a people together to defend against an evil genocidal aggressor, but all too often flags are used as divisive symbols by overdefensive egotists to project their self hatred onto people outside of their parochial familiarity. In a world where countries are more often competing against each other all the time, economically or militarily rather than cooperating with each other, that corrupt way of perceiving your fellow humans maintained by the evil people at the helm filters down to the individual psychi and the adoption of flags is usually as a divisive symbol. You don't need to hold an ID card (a psychological or physical one) or fly a flag to be a being in the omniverse
That'll be a yes then.
You're very presumptuous aren't you Seamus. What proportion of people waving flags do you suppose were terrorist supporters then and how many do you suppose were waving flags in defence from a terrorist nation. Let's not forget, in the troubles that have gone on for many decades and did not start on Oct 7 2023, have not murders by Hamas almost always been met by a far escalated amount of murders by Israel. They have always served to escalate by inflicting greater terror. And unfortunately for a large amount of innocent people who do not support the hypocritical regime that playground tactic is only ever going to end one way.
How about pro-truth anarchists Keith, cos the truth is what matters, no?
