Chair of Harlow Reform continues to demand answers to unanswered questions on Endeavour House

Politics / Wed 22nd Oct 2025 at 12:52pm

Dear Editor,

After the recent Endeavour-House-for-asylum-seekers fiasco, it’s likely that Leader of the Council, Cllr Dan Swords, is breathing a sigh of relief after the furore he ignited showed signs of settling down.

To recap, we saw Labour’s leader hysterically calling for his resignation and hundreds of concerned residents commenting on social media and Your Harlow.  Cllr Swords then held a crisis interview with Your Harlow having also already committed, in writing, to release all correspondence with the Home Office/its contractor ClearSprings Readyhomes. This was meant to give the public full disclosure on the nature of the Home Office plans he had so loudly and vociferously lambasted on video.

Two weeks on and Cllr Swords has still NOT released all of the correspondence he solemnly undertook to, so where are we now? Well, left with lots of questions.

We still have no real clarity on what the Council knew and when.

  • Did Cllr Swords know, as understood by the media and Harlow’s MP, that accommodation in Endeavour House was being sought for just three asylum seekers sharing a single room? And if he did, why did he present the matter so very differently triggering widespread public alarm?
  • If he didn’t know it was but 3, where did he gain the impression significant numbers were intended for Endeavour House?
  • What did he first know of the other 201 asylum seekers apparently enumerated in the Home Office-Clearsprings consultation document? Did he know if they were to be dispersed, rather than located in Endeavour House?
  • The Leader of the Council went on to claim that the Council and Harlow residents had “won a huge victory” over the Home Office, dubiously all within a 24-hour period. Can he prove that the Endeavour House proposal was indeed withdrawn by the Home Office-Clearsprings because of local opposition, or was this due to other factors?
  • What part did Endeavour House’s owners play in the alleged Home Office climbdown?
  • Did they withdraw any broader plans to disperse up to 204 asylum seekers in Harlow or just the 3 earmarked for Endeavour House? How big then is the “victory” Cllr Swords claims to have won?

Harlow is owed an explanation as serious questions remain which go to the heart of how our Council is run, whether it is by sober analysis and thoughtful communication, or by impulse, rushes to judgement and political posturing.

As the correspondence has not been forthcoming, a Freedom of Information request was recently submitted to the Council, hopefully forcing full disclosure. We hope this will help answer some of residents’ concerns around these recent, troubling events. we also hope it will help uncover the truth on the Home Office’s apparent plans to put hundreds of so-called “asylum seekers” in Harlow.

Yours faithfully,

Scott Hegley

It will be good to have this transparency - I submitted an FOI for the same information on the 8th October and have yet to hear back. I have no doubt it will be significant since Dan Swords was extremely selective in the snippets of the letter he released.

Councilor Swords, May 2026 isn't far off. A lot of people will remember on both side of the Political arena, your dismissive attitude. May 2026 with be quite interesting.

Some reasonable questions put in this letter. However, the people involved are not so-called "asylum seekers". They are asylum seekers until their application has been adjudicated. The Refugee Council noted regarding official government figures to March 2025: "Since January 2022, 95% of those who crossed the Channel claimed asylum in the UK, and a third are still waiting for a decision. Of those who did receive a decision, 51,361 (66%) were grants of protection." I have a question for our reform candidate. With his boss Nigel farage loving the hitler youth since a school boy and hailing putin as the strongest most courageous leader ever..will the party members not be wearing poppies in November as it will be regarded as hypocritical to fallen soilders in the 2 world wars who faught against fascism

Here is the link to the Government figures relating to small boat arrivals. From January 2018 to March 2025 in respect of those cases decided, 51,361 (66% of the total of 77,374) were granted refugee status or other leave to remain. These cases accounted for 56,605 persons. Government figures to June 2025 shows in cases of small boat arrivals since January 2018 some 65% achieved refugee status or other leave to remain. This is 1% lower than in March. In the three months since March 9,320 cases have been given an initial decision. 'Pete' - I suggest you crawl back under your rock, do a bit of up-to-date research and don't just believe the most simplistic quotes you hear/read. Farage's 'hitler youth' (sic) incident occurred in his teens, so maybe 45 years ago. There's no suggestion of him "loving the hitler youth since a school boy". Besides, the Labour Party's incompetent excuse for a Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy, rowed back a bit on his imputations a while later. With an Irish schoolfriend, I sang along with Irish Rebel Songs as a daft kid in Harlow. Certainly didn't reduce my disdain for the Irish terrorism in subsequent years. As for Putin, Farage's words, when asked which current (in 2014) world leader he admired most, were “As an operator, but not as a human being, I would say Putin. The way he played the whole Syria thing. Brilliant. Not that I approve of him politically". Completely different to the implication you're trying to make. Indeed, Putin was a different kettle of fish in those days and was widely admired for his apparent strength of leadership and concern for his country by many Britons, iirc.
