Essex County Council: No plans to take down flags from lamp posts in Harlow

News / Sat 1st Nov 2025 at 03:21pm

THE council responsible for lamp posts in Harlow appear to have no intention of removing flags attached to them.

YH understands that the flags were placed as part of a promotion for a demonstration in London organised by the far right.

But that was late September. Now in the first week of November, they remain there. Many look bedraggled however, it looks like they are there to stay.

We asked Essex Council a very specific question on what was their plan for taking the flags down and perhaps provide a timescale.

A spokesperson for Essex County Council said: “We fully support people’s right to fly the St George’s Cross with pride, as we do outside our headquarters at County Hall.

“However, we strongly discourage anyone from altering highways infrastructure on roundabouts, crossings and signs across Essex. This significantly risks the safety of road users because it is a distraction. This also applies to flags that pose a safety risk to users on the highways.

“Where there is a risk to safety we will be repainting and reinstating highways assets, which unfortunately comes at a cost to taxpayers.”

We also cc’d all four of Harlow’s Essex County Council members. They are: Andrew Johnson, Mike Hardware, Clive Souter and Mike Garnett.

They have not replied.

Attaching any item, be that a flag or other display, to a lamppost or other street furniture is an offence under the Highways Act.

So we imagine, people could either go on line to Essex Police or go through a complicated process on Essex County Council’s website and report the flags under “damaged”.

Now compare this to Hertfordshire, where they have adopted a different approach.

On their website , is a very clear message.

It states: “Whilst we recognise the importance of the Union Flag and the Flag of St George as symbols of national pride, we have a policy of not allowing any items to be attached to lampposts and other street furniture we are responsible for without our permission.

“Unauthorised items attached to lampposts and graffiti on the highway will be removed. This will be done when a team is available, though we are unable to provide a specific timescale”.

Last month they issued a press release, which stated

“Police could now be called on to protect highways contractors as they remove St George’s flags from lampposts in Hertfordshire, following incidents where workers have been verbally abused and spat at”.

Some may look at the political optics. The Liberal Democrats run Hertfordshire County Council. The Conservatives run Essex.

How is this even a news story. So, some people want to put our National Flag on lampposts. Is this an issue that other people feel they have to make a point about it. I am more concerned about the state of the Town Centre, why women I know are scared to walk around the Town Centre once what little shops there are, shut for the day,, the endless roadworks which seem to never look like will come to a conclusion, no police presence anywhere....

Nothing will happen until a flag blows down onto the windscreen of a car , and a serious accident occurs. Then it will be too late. ECC take them down , take some responsibility, what are you being paid for.

It’s a disgrace that as we approach the annual observance of Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday we have these Chinese facsimiles of our national flags dangling on single cable tie from the lamp posts. I know that the developmentally challenged bunch who went round in the middle of the night, in their combats and Balaklavas, have no pride in their country - But our council, out of respect for those who made the ultimate personal sacrifices, should sort this shambles.

I’d rather spend money on schools, hospitals and pot holes but some people want money to go on foreign men and flags being taken down.

Putting up flags other than palestine/blm or lgbt was always going to see guardian readers froth at the mouth, even more so if it was our own nation/countries flags where they would have an apopletic hissy fit. It's a funny old world.

I have no particular problem with the flag, since it happens to be my flag too. What I resent is people besmirching my flag by using it to intimidate other members of our community. As we approach Rememberance Day, please remember that those who fell in the Second World War died fighting Fascism, not voting for it. One more thing. If you are going to fly our nation's flag, can you PUR-LEEZE fly it the right way up? I am sick of seeing so many of them upside-down...

Billy M . Perhaps the money spent buying the flags could have gone towards hospitals, pot holes, and schools. The money would not have to be paid out if the flags weren't put up in the first place. You are venting your anger at the wrong people, unless you are one of the flag erectors that is.
