ESSEX Police has seized more uninsured vehicles in the first ten months of 2025 than in the whole of 2024 – a clear sign of the force’s continued commitment to keeping the county’s roads safe.
A spokesperson said: “As a force, we continue to seize very high numbers of vehicles under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act. This legislation allows officers to remove vehicles from the road if they are being driven without insurance or a valid licence.

In 2022, Essex Police seized 2,957 uninsured vehicles. That number rose to 3,580 in 2023, and again to 4,365 in 2024. With 2025 not yet over, the current total has already surpassed last year’s figure – highlighting the scale of the issue and the proactive work being done to tackle it.
Our work will continue during a week-long national campaign to target uninsured vehicles under Operation Drive Insured.
Uninsured drivers may:
It is simple the cost of living is flying through the roof taxes, are going up and people and their credit cards are maxed out. At the same time they need to be able to drive to get to work. It is only going to get worse after the budget.
Police the local traffic jams, nick the offenders on the spot, nowhere to go in the traffic.
Fit remote kill switches to all cars. If you drive and have no insurance, roadside cameras will see you and send a kill engine signal at your car. This stops illegal cars moving and ends police chases.
I agree, Adam, these horribly inflationary times - where sky high food, energy, insurance and other prices, exacerbated by our wealthy Chancellor's and rich PM's reckless policies, are creating circumstances which leave struggling citizens with no option other to defer paying for car insurance and to steal when they have no money for food. Little wonder crimes driven by poverty, such as widespread shoplifting and driving without car insurance are on the rise, not just among working class workers but among middle class workers too. When will our government stop wake up the misery it is causing?
