AN NHS trust says that blue badge holders who received parking fines at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) can appeal following a public outcry over poor signage reports the Bishop Stortford Independent.
Residents who were penalised for failing to pay and display while legitimately parking in disabled bays at PAH in Harlow contacted the Stortford-based paper disgusted that they were targeted in the first place.
They criticised the PAH NHS Trust’s decision to charge blue badge holders for parking following introduction of an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system and highlighted how inadequate signs meant many people did not even realise that the new rule applied.
Michael Meredith, director of strategy and estates for the PAH NHS Trust, said: “In line with national guidelines, fair-for-all not free-for-all principles for sustainable car parking, and consultation and agreement with our patient panel, we have introduced car parking charges for blue badge holders.
“We provide a large number of bays for blue badge holders which are positioned close to entrances. Blue badge holders can still claim reduced rate or free parking for visiting for end-of-life care, chemotherapy, palliative care or when visiting the labour ward or neonatal intensive care unit.”
He added: “In response to feedback from patients and visitors, we are revising the signage for blue badge users. Those who have received a fine can appeal it using the information on the penalty notice issued. We apologise for any concern caused as we seek to make our parking arrangements fair for all our visitors.”
i have already paid a penalty for parking at Harlow hospital WOULD I GET A REFUND?
Received parking ticket, although parked in blue badge bay displaying badge 80 years old on my own, just sign saying take badge to office, I was in rear park going in lower ground floor, what office, where? Cash cow, appalling way to treat elderly
On the 15th of March 2022. My Brother Terry called me to say our Sister Geraldine was near to her end of life, He picked me up and we went together. I took my Blue Badges with me, Sadly my Sister passed away that evening. Then whilst my Family were arranging the Funeral My Brother received a fine of £60.00 Which I sent a cheque for payment. This in my opinion is appalling.
I'm a Blue Badge holder and make regular appointments at Epping hospital, Herts and Essex hospital and Princess Alexandra hospital. No charges and no problem at Epping and Herts and Essex. Why charge regular Blue badge holders at Princess Alexandra. ??
I attended PAH A&E and was sent over to the Same Day unit where we spent the full afternoon waiting to be seen. On arriving as I am disabled and have to use a wheelchair we parked in a disabled bay and put the blue badges in the windscreen I had already registered the car at the desk inside the hospital previously so was surprised to see I have now received a fine for £60.00 as I am a pensioner I think this is totally out of order
I was shocked when i received a parking fine for parking in a disabled bay at Harlow hospital clearly displayed badge so my husband has been ill for four years since meningitis has had continuous complications so when I registered his badge at the hospital I was told it was registered until the badge has expired so why would I look at the payment machine I’m absolutely disgusted how disabled people have been treated why were we not informed about any change I will not pay £60 to take my sick husband to hospital so I’m going to appeal again
21/5,24 Registered my arrival at front desk with blue badge as I was advised by reception in radiology but did not see that it was not free for badge holders so got a shock when I received a fine, I appealed but it didn’t matter if the actual NHS got this money then so be it, but Private Companies fleecing pensioners and everyone else they are the lowest of the low. Perhaps a bigger sign saying blue badge holders are not exempt but then they wouldn’t make as much money.
