History: Harlow voters go for Labour in the 1966 General Election

THE GENERAL Election of 1966 was held on March 31st, with the vast majority of results coming out on April 1st.

The result was a landslide victory for the Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

Harlow was part of the Epping constituency and would only become the Harlow constituency in 1974.

Labour’s Stan Newens won the seat with a majority of 7,508.

Interesting stat..Epping were horrified and jumped ship..leaving Harlow in the hands of Labour..MP & Council..Never left square one.

Actually, Labour took Epping in the 1964 General Election. It reverted to Conservative in 1970, when Norman Tebbit was elected as MP. Harlow constituency was created in 1974. It has always included a number of neighbouring villages and not just the urban district.
