London Stansted to introduce barrier free system at forecourt drop off area
Business / Tue 17th Dec 2024 at 03:36pm
LONDON Stansted today announced it is to introduce a new barrierless system for vehicles dropping off passengers at its Express Set Down (ESD) area as part of the airport’s £1.1bn transformation programme.

The new technology will be managed through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems like that already in use at the Dartford Crossing and will come into operation in late January 2025.
The switch to a new barrier-free ESD system is aimed at enhancing the overall experience for both drivers and passengers by streamlining the drop-off process. By removing the existing barriers, drivers will pass through more smoothly without the need to stop on exit, helping reduce congestion and improving traffic flow.
The ESD charge will need to be paid by midnight the day after making the drop-off, either online or by phone. No payments will be able to be made when exiting the area. Frequent users, including taxi drivers, will be able to register for an auto-pay account with full registration details available in the new year, while discounts for eligible local residents will be unaffected by the change. There will be prominent signage in the ESD area to remind drivers of the new system once it is introduced.
Anita Harrison, London Stansted’s Customer Operations Director, said:
“We recently announced our five-year £1.1bn investment programme that will deliver wide-ranging benefits at every touch point of a passenger’s journey while at the airport, and this initiative is an example of our commitment to enhance the travel experience at London Stansted.
“The new barrierless system we will introduce in the new year will make dropping-off passengers quicker and more convenient, reducing driver waiting times and helping improve passenger flows.
“We have seen these systems work effectively at other airports and in other settings, such as bridges, toll roads and tunnels and that is why we are confident it will improve the overall experience for users.
“Full details of the new system will be available on our website early in 2025, with new signage also displayed in the ESD area advising users of the pending changes, but it’s important to raise awareness now so drivers have advanced notice of the improvements we are bringing in.”
Will the feee still be reduced for local residents as it is now
I think you mean 'touchpoint' rather than "touch point' - Also, I thought the whole point of these charges was to discourage private car use and to encourage public transport use? Every time you put forward a proposal for more passengers, you say ‘We’re not going to put any money into public transport, but we're going to discourage private car use through charges’ - The way you explain this makes it sound like the charges are just another money-making wheeze.
It does say we won't be affected as residents
What i find strange is, i live locally and have a card which we now use so a friend can drop us at the airport, which seems logical as we live near and want to use it, but how are we supposed to get dropped off when it uses our number plate recognition? Our friend who would normally take us is not insured to drive our car so totally useless to us living close to???
It's just another money making rip off: if they were serious about the environment and shifting people to public transport they'd have a free bus service from local stations.
How much will the charge be????
Jane Rogers, on the airport website it says local people can register 2 cars which might solve your problem
Why do disable badge holders have to be charged whilst it free if you have a blue badge at Heathrow its a disgrace !
Stanstead, like other airports, simply use motorists as cash cows. £7 just to drive in and drop off passengers is a clear rip-off and should be classed as theft. How do they get away with this?
Peter To qualify for the discount both vehicles have to be registered with the DVLA at the same address. In Jane’s situation, l suspect that her friend doesn’t live in the local discount catchment area so they aren’t able to claim the discount in their own right.
Jimmy, Stanstead has the highest drop off charges in the Uk, so it’s not surprising that they also charge blue badge holders. Also with the high amount of fraudulent use with blue badges, a number of Councils are doing the same.
This is getting more and more ridiculous. It should also be Free ...... £7 is an outright RIP OFF Thieves. Would rather drive to another airport out of spite
STOP THE STEALTH TAX. YOUR PROFITS SHOW THAT YOU MAKE MORE THAN ENOUGH FROM AIRPORT TAX FROM THE MILLIONS OF TRAVELLERS EVERY YEAR!
Anita Harrison I don't think paying to drop off friends/family and now barrier free means an enhanced experience! It just means that if we forget to pay you will charge us an ridiculous amount because we forgot! And you know from your research that I am correct that you are hoping that drivers will forget so that you can then charge a £100 plus fine as you will obviously have their registration details and chase them merciless for payment! The only "ENHANCEMENT" will be in your profits!😡
