Essex Trading Standards warns residents about winter fuel scam

Crime / Tue 31st Dec 2024 at 08:55am

TRADING Standards has warned Harlow residents about scam messages relating to winter fuel payments.

The texts direct recipients to a website to trick them into handing over their details, including bank account information.

One of the hoax messages reads: “When you receive this message, it means you have received a new round of winter heating subsidies approved by the local council. Please fill in the link below in time to receive your subsidy.”

The messages often warn that the link is only open for a short time, urging residents to provide their details quickly.

Essex Trading Standards said: “Be cautious of any message received with similar wording and never click on any link you don’t recognise or trust.

“This type of bogus messaging has been widely reported across the country. Please be aware that local councils will only contact residents they believe to be eligible for any additional payments and will use their own data.

“The Government’s warm home discount is applied automatically. Eligible individuals will receive a letter from their local council telling them they are eligible for a payment, and no action is required by the recipient.

“Do not give anyone your personal data after receiving a text message.”

The only scam I see is paying tax to Essex county council.
