Hugely distrubing to hear of such an incident: this is by no means the first incident involving machete carrying teenagers. It points to the fact that there are fundamental social failures within our society not least a lack of local policing, good youth and education services together with the rise of poverty. Until these problems are tackled we can point to the failure of governments of all shades and the uk will continue on a downward slide. It's disappointing that Essex Harlow Councils, who do have major levers they could pull don't seem to recognise that they could do to bring about significant change. It's the social equivalent of fixing all of the potholes.

Nostradamus, youth services will not work take these offenders if guilty and give them 15 years, no early release no play stations of TV just a strict hard prison. I care not for their rehabilitation just that they are kept away from society, if upon release they re offend then give them 30 years then life. The solution to crime is simple you just have to ignore the hand wringing wets how have destroyed this once great country.

Adam the point is that has all of the services mentioned including Sure Start not been run down but developed over the decades of decline it's 99% probable that the problems we have now would have been averted. Action now would reduce problems and divert youngsters into far happier and productive lifestyles whilst in the long run save massive amounts of expenditure from the public purse.

I must agree antisocial behaviour is on the increase and unless radical steps are taken it will continue to do so. Too many excuses are being made as to why it's happening to quote Gilbert and Sulivan "let the punishment fit the crime". It would seem that a kindly word and don't do it again attitude towards offenders just isn't working. Name and shame the offenders instead of hiding their identity because of their age if they are old enough to commit crime they are old enough to be punished

There was a white pedal bike that had been left in in Nichols field for 2-3 days prior to this

It is the job of parents to bring up children. Not the Government's.

Matthew you are absolutely spot on, all too often people blame the government for everything, they have lost sight of "Personal Responsibility" if parents can't even potty train their kids and expect schools to do it for them what hope have they got!

With how the world is, how harlow is and the mentality of some people now days.......the guy should have expected that reaction, if it wad HIS bike then take a photo nd go to the police. Hes been assaulted in an area eith no cctv or very little because he chose to confront a group of people about a stolen bike. He didnt deserve it but at the same time confronting someone is inherently risky even more so a group of people on your own, im willing to bet these lad had hoodies, masks ect so why would a man in his 40s decide that it was a good idea to confront this group on his own about his stolen bike or bike he presumed stolen....its like walkimg out into a road and then wondering why are you got hit by a car
