Crime / Tue 1st Jul 2025 at 10:27am

OFFICERS keeping you safe on the roads in your neighbourhood identified more than 600 speeding offences in just eight days in areas where it’s been identified as a big issue.

Between 16 and 23 June, officers from our Road Crime Team carried out speed checks in neighbourhoods across the county.

The activity was funded by the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) which is commited to achieving Vision Zero – the elimination of all road deaths and serious injuries on Essex’s roads.
In total, 616 offences were recorded in key areas where speeding has been identified as a high risk:

Harwich

  • 51 offences
    Takeley, Dunmow, and Stansted Mountfitchet
  • 226 offences including speeds of 48mph in a 30mph zone
    Beaulieu Parkway in Chelmsford
  • 141 offences including speeds of up to 60mph in a 40mph zone
    Great Bromley and Elmstead Market
  • 13 offences
    Pilgrims Hatch and Shenfield
  • 28 offences including 51mph in a 30mph zone
  • A414, Commonside Road, and Station Road
  • 74 offences
Ramsden Heath, Bicknacre, and South Woodham Ferrers
  • 11 offences including 40mph in a 30mph zone
Sewardstone Road, Goldings Hill, and Oakwood Hill in Loughton, Chigwell Rise, Abridge, and Theydon Bois

– 72 offences including a speed of 46mph in a 30mph zone

Adam Pipe, Head of Roads Policing, said: “Speeding has been one of the key contributor factors to a large number of the most serious collisions that have taken place across Essex this year.

“This includes collisions where, sadly, people have lost their lives.
“This operation is just one example of how partnership collaboration through the SERP helps ensure a data- led and visible approach to changing road user behaviour can save lives.

“We value our neighbourhoods which is why we carry out this activity. We want to make sure you’re safe on the roads and we will take action against those who are a risk to other road users.

“We will not apologise for taking enforcement action which deals with people posing a danger to others.
“This isn’t about revenue collection, this is about keeping you safe and you will continue to see us in your neighbourhood throughout the summer.”

This is just a tip of the iceberg as far as speeding drivers is concerned. Although the date period is shown, it doesn’t mention the actual time period that these speeding offences were recorded in. The numerous occasions that l’ve seen these police speed roadside checks being carried out, they seem to be in the mid morning to mid afternoon time period. I don’t recall seeing them being carried out in the early or late evenings or more especially in the weekend evenings, when the majority of accidents, where speed is a major factor.

They need to be down the 414 evenings and weekends from 6am to midnight the noise from the boy racers in their modified cars and bikes is sometimes deafening especially from the Mark Hall roundabout down to Gates roundabout, even the circular circuit from junction 7 to 7a and back up to Potter street is bad. So bad in fact you can't sleep with windows open in this hot weather if you are unfortunate to live in estates lining the race route.

This just reflects the speed most people drive at and although the 30mph sped limit was probably a good idea in 1935 when cars like an Austin Seven had brakes operated by cable and were not great in the day, with modern ABS technology perhaps it might be said that 30 mph is a little on the low side for modern cars.

Epping New Road and Earls path has terrible speeding going on mostly all day and night.

The speeding problem though Potter Street has fell on deaf ears for years. Pupils attending Passmore school and the two junior schools have to cross a busy road to get to school. With Wright's Court,Mandeville Close and Jack Stevens Close there is probably more supported housing involving the elderly than in any other part of the Town. Prentice Place shopping precinct with it's nonsensical entrance and exit is another danger spot Although many promises have been made but nothing has changed
