CHELMSFORD Racecourse presents its latest all-weather meeting on Thursday evening, complete with six races; four handicaps, a novice and a fillies’ maiden.

Up first is an apprentice handicap over five furlongs (6.15). Colors Of Freedom won her last start at Wolverhampton over this trip and, from stall three, could feasibly put up another good performance. Charlie Wallis’ Marcus might be worth a look in first-time blinkers, having disappointed last time but has proven to be better than that in the past, while My Boy Harry also could be involved with a three-pound claimer in the saddle.
Race two is a two-year-old’s six-furlong novice (6.45). Three of the eight juveniles are newcomers, of which the best should be the Juddmonte-owned and Ralph Beckett-trained Dartrey. None of those with form have shown to be overly promising as of yet, so it may be best to side with the Juddmonte colt, whose trainer is doing especially well with two-year-olds, but particularly so on the all-weather, so Dartrey could be his next winner.
Next is a three-year-olds’ six-furlong handicap (7.15). Jack Channon’s Medinilla should have a strong chance, running off the same mark as when second of seven at Catterick last time, but with a five-pound claimer in the saddle this time, while Style King might also be able to get involved now down a further two pounds from a decent midfield finish last time out at Southwell over this trip.
The fourth race is a mile handicap (7.45). Ralph Beckett’s Bright Times Ahead showed ability on debut last year, but has failed to follow up in two starts this term. Making her handicap and all-weather debut here, though, she may prove to be a different case and could go well. Borgi could be in the mix, down to his last winning mark, as might Ollie Sangster’s Bijoux, who won a novice fillies’ race in March and goes in a handicap for the first time.
The penultimate race is a maiden fillies’ race over a mile and a quarter (8.15). Petra Grey and Bronte Beach are the debutants here, with the latter promising the most on paper. Glistening should be better than a very disappointing and out of character seasonal reappearance, but it might be safer to side with the consistent and able Majaz, who steps up in trip from a mile and could get to the front from stall two here under Jim Crowley.
Finally, the evening concludes with a three-year-olds’ handicap over a mile and two furlongs (8.45). Backer Bilk should be of interest, making his debut for the typically in-form James Owen, having been a useful sort for Jim and Suzi Best. Hilal Kobeissi’s Al Baarez should also be worth considering, stepping up in trip from a decent run over a mile last time, and could be capable of picking up at least a place.
