Harlow’s Nepalese community hold candlelit service to honour victims of recent violence

Harlow is 75: A Celebration of Global Harlow / Thu 11th Sep 2025 at 02:21pm

MEMBERS of the Nepali community in Harlow gathered last light for a solemn candlelight service to honour the victims of the recent violence in Nepal, where over 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured during nationwide protests.

Families, community leaders, and young people came together in quiet reflection, holding candles and offering prayers for peace in their homeland. The event was marked by an atmosphere of grief and solidarity, as participants shared their sorrow for those who lost their lives and their hope for stability in Nepal.

“We may be far from home, but our hearts are with the families who are suffering in Nepal,” said one community member. “This vigil is our way of standing together, showing love, and calling for peace.”

The vigil follows 2 days of violent unrest in Kathmandu and other cities, where clashes between protesters and security forces escalated into bloodshed. Soldiers now patrol the streets of the capital under curfew as Nepal reels from political turmoil and calls for reform.

In Harlow, many expressed concern not only for the safety of relatives back in Nepal but also for the future of the country’s youth, who have been at the forefront of the protests.

“We are here tonight to remember those who were killed,” said another participant. “But we are also here to remind ourselves that justice and peace must prevail. Nepal’s future depends on it.”

As candles flickered in the night, the Harlow Nepali community stood united—mourning lives lost and expressing hope that Nepal will find a path to healing and stability
