EPPING Forest District Council is pleased to announce the completion of the new control tower at North Weald Airfield.

This state-of-the-art facility provides uninterrupted views of the runway and modern facilities for the operations team.

Its completion marks a significant milestone in the council’s investment in economic development in the district and its ongoing commitment to aviation.

New features
Designed with environmental sustainability at its core, the new control tower features:

Air source heat pump technology
Solar panels
Low-energy lighting
EV charging points

The project was delivered on time and within budget by Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) and Qualis, the council’s wholly-owned development company, in partnership with Faircloth Construction, renowned for its quality and sustainability standards.

As well as the new control tower, the airfield has a new public entrance in Merlin Way with an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera system which has improved accessibility and security.

Gate guardian

Visitors to the airfield will have noticed an important feature is currently missing. The iconic Spirit of North Weald gate guardian will be returning and has been allocated a new home, opposite the new control tower.

The full-size fibreglass replica Hawker Hurricane is currently undergoing some restoration works to repair the damage caused from its time out in the elements.

It celebrates the special association forged between the airfield and the village of North Weald since its RAF days.

A proud moment

“The completion of the new control tower is a proud moment for EFDC. It demonstrates our commitment to aviation to our tenants and the annual 1,200 visiting aircraft while enabling future commercial growth.”

Councillor Chris Whitbread, Leader of Epping Forest District Council
Where history meets innovation
