Harlow Occupational Health Service (HOHS) set to close its doors.

Health / Wed 10th Dec 2025 at 08:05am

AFTER 70 years of supporting workplace health and wellbeing, Harlow Occupational Health Service (HOHS) is closing its doors.

With great regret the Board of Trustees announced today that it will cease all operations on 22
December 2025 due to a significant and sustained reduction in the demand for its services.

After careful consideration and following consultation with staff and stakeholders the Trustees have made this difficult decision to ensure that any remaining resources are used responsibly and in line with their legal duties.

Over the past 70 years the needs of businesses and charities have evolved significantly and the demand for more traditionally provided occupational health services has declined.

More organisations have developed their own internal capacity, and the needs of community-based organisations have also changed.

Whilst the decision was not an easy one to make, the staff and the board are rightly proud of the positive impact HOHS has had over the past 70 years.

The board are very grateful to the staff team and loyal clients who have supported the organisation throughout our journey.

In preparation for the closure HOHS has been working with a Human Resource specialist as well as a legal advisor, to ensure a smooth transition and to responsibly conclude any operational and financial commitments.

Since its founding year HOHS has been committed to helping employers and employees to create safer healthier and more supportive workplaces.

Although this chapter is ending the legacy of HOHS will continue through the many lives and organisations they have worked with. The Board of Trustees would like to thank all service users and the local community for their trust and support over the past 70+ years.

Harlow Trades Union Council was one of the Trustees and I was privileged to serve as Chair of the HOHS Board back in 2018. My wife Waida was also a Trustee before me, and as Unison branch secretary at PAH she saw the valuable work HOHS' occupational health doctors provided in helping her members. I can honestly say that the staff at HOHS were a caring team and I am deeply saddened that they are losing their jobs. I wish them all a bright future and thank them for their unstinting service to the workers of Harlow.

So sad to hear this as both my late mother & myself worked for them when it was the Harlow Industrial Health Service back in the 60s. It provided a great service to the town.

My wife kept this organisation running for 30 years through the good times and the bad until it was time to retire. She has also offered her help to the trustees but they did not take it. I feel this organisation could still be kept running with better management. Such a shame.
