Crime / Tue 23rd Dec 2025 at 10:32am
POLICE investigating a collision in Harlow yesterday morning (Monday 22 December) are now in a position to confirm that the driver of one of the vehicles sadly died at the scene.

A spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a collision involving a car and a lorry in Gilden Way at 8.50am.
Sadly, the driver of the car, a man in his 70s, died at the scene. A pedestrian was also injured in the collision and taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
A number of emergency services attended and the road was closed for a number of hours.
“Our enquiries are ongoing”.
Awful, absolutely awful. Something needs to be done about the way people drive on that stretch of road. All my love and thoughts with the mans friends and family, even more so this time of year. RIP.
Please will ECC and our councillors do something about this stretch of road. I cross it everyday and have seen numerous drivers doing so much more than 40 mph. Red lights jumped, not only by one driver, but by two or three at a time. Drivers, frustrated with those who stick to the speed limit, take massive risks to pass them.
My house faces Gilden Way just down from The pelican crossing many a time I’ve gone to cross the road when is supposed to be safe to do so only to have a lucky escape when idiot drivers decide that they are going to jump a red light . The road is like a race track late at night even articulated Lorry’s doing more than 60mph . They only put the bollards opposite the Mulberry Green turning due to so many accidents . How many more deaths are going to happen before EEC put in a speed camera ?
The accident rate on Gilden Way has been alarmingly high over the past few years. The presence of an unprotected footpath that leads directly to a major secondary school is particularly concerning, especially for children who travel on foot each day. There are currently very few measures in place to slow traffic or protect pedestrians. Speed cameras, physical barriers, clearer speed limit signage, or other traffic calming interventions would make a meaningful difference. I appreciate that resources are limited, but the current situation is clearly unsafe. I would strongly urge the council to review this stretch of road as a priority and take action to reduce the risk before a more incidents occur.
Hey X, I live in Germany and have done for almost 12 years. Believe me when I tell you this. The Germans are no better drivers than anyone else. The fact here is speed limit free zones, still encourages people to drive their super cars like idiots without any regard for safety. Germany, Netherlands, Poland, France etc. We are all driving like idiots. Just a shame that this happened in this specific stretch of road because it was being touted for a while as being safe.
Golden way was never a problem till they remodeled the road while building junction 7a. Does this suggest poor planning?
Gilden way! I also seem to remember there used to be a pedestrian underpass that seems to have gone by the wayside just to increase the hazards.
It's a worry as school kids use the lights to cross the road there for mark hall school.
To all those who are concerned in this incident, the driver that passed had an episode in which he crashed into the lorry driver. It was an unfortunate incident and couldn’t have been prevented, by the lorry driver, as stated by the police due to the elderly man’s condition at the time. This therefore concludes that it was not the lorry drivers fault at all. Condolences to all those, and families, involved
There was an accident in the same spot on Friday evening in rush hour.. The kids tend to walk down the grass verge instead of the safer option, the pavement. The road was safer at 60mph but that was before J7a and the huge volume of traffic coming off M11. The posts at the end of Mulberry Green on Gilden Way were put in to stop illegal right turns.( didn’t stop the quad bike / car accident , car doing U-turn and quad on wrong side of road) The junction at Mayfield Farm is just as bad, with people turning right into it ( motorcyclist hit by car doing illegal right turn )
The driving in Harlow is atrocious , how so many people passwd their driving tests is beyond me. I walk more than drive these days and what an eye opener that is, the speeding is everywhere. Fourth Avenue to the Pinnacles and Elizabeth Way have become race tracks. It`s only a matter of time until we have carnage there. I believe Essex county council are considering speed cameras for both. The sooner the better.
