THE OLD Harlow campus of Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada is set to close.
Back in November, it was reported that closure was an option as bosses were working to address the institution’s $20 million deficit and declining student enrolment.
In December, Harlow Council passed a motion to support the campus.
The decision was made on Tuesday at a special meeting of the board in St John’s, Canada.
Harlow campus, located in Old Harlow, is a study abroad centre for MUN students that opened in 1969 after Newfoundland premier Joey Smallwood asked Lord Stephen Taylor of Harlow to become president and vice-chancellor of the university.

Academic programming and events at Harlow Campus will continue until Aug. 31, 2026.
The university stated: “In the case of Harlow Campus, net proceeds from the sale of property will be reinvested to ensure global learning opportunities are more accessible and equitable for a broader array of students from Newfoundland and Labrador.
“These decisions are part of a broader commitment to evolve Memorial into a more student-focused, research-intensive and financially resilient university.
The President of Memorial University, Janet Morrison said: “These learning and working spaces have fostered meaningful experiences, collaboration and connections.
“Their loss will naturally evoke feelings of grief for some members of our community. But Memorial must be responsive to the pressures we are facing. By making courageous choices now, we are positioning Memorial to be stronger, more focused and more resilient.”

More reaction to come.
"The university stated: “In the case of Harlow Campus, net proceeds from the sale of property will be reinvested to ensure global learning opportunities are more accessible and equitable for a broader array of students from Newfoundland and Labrador. " I pressume then around August, we will start seeing building applications from the developers who will buy the plot. Are any of the buildings/grounds/tree's etc covered by any protection orders?
All those individual rooms... people in Old Harlow better keep their eye on the councils website otherwise they may well be finding their area changing a lot and not for the better. Sad to see the university connection end, a long history in Harlow and the students have been a great bunch of kids for many a year.
This is such a shame. My primary school had several teachers from Newfoundland in the 90s thanks to this campus, they have contributed to the lives of some of the best achievers from those classes.
I attended Harlow Campus in 1982, and I have many many fond memories of my experience there. It was my first times ever in England, but would not be my last. My wife and I have been back twice, and are planning another visit for next fall. I retired from a lengthy teaching career three years ago, a career that I can honestly say began in Harlow, England.
