Essex County Council elections set to go ahead

ESSEX County Council’s elections will be going ahead in May, the Secretary of State Steve Reed has said reports the BBC.

In a letter sent to the Conservative council leader Kevin Bentley, Reed writes: “I will not be including the election to Essex County Council in legislation to postpone local elections”.
The council confirmed it had been told elections on 7 May would be going ahead.
Harlow has four representatives at Essex County Council. They are all Conservative.

As a result, all the work leading up to the County Council elections will continue as usual, polling stations across the Town will be open and the count afterwards will take place in Harlow. So the excuse that staff are to busy with the regeneration of the town to hold Harlow Council elections really does not stand up to scrutiny.
So we will be having elections after all. Democracy restored. This is good news as ECC elections were last held in 2021 and are already overdue. As for the District elections these were last held as all out elections only two years ago in 2024 so we don't need them now as they are supposed to be for 4 years and being postponed until next year no councillors will have served more than the statutory 4 years. It is good that the overdue County elections are going ahead.
Harlow has a good opportunity to elect 5 Reform councillors and send a clear message that we want change.
