Primary school places – time to apply

ESSEX County Council is encouraging parents to apply for primary school places for September 2014.
Parents and carers of children born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 must apply between 11 November 2013 and 15 January 2014 for primary school places for the September 2014 intake. All reception aged children are entitled to start school in the September following their fourth birthday.
Applications can be made via the website at www.essex.gov.uk/admissions. The site enables parents to search for the school information, read Ofsted reports, check admissions criteria and catchment areas and submit applications.
Essex County Councillor Ray Gooding, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “Applying for the right primary schools for your child is an important decision and I would urge parents to use the tools available on www.essex.gov.uk/admissions to ensure they make an informed application.
“Due to increasing pressure on primary school places, schools can become oversubscribed so it is important for parents to carefully consider admissions criteria and give themselves maximum opportunity to be considered for a school they want by using up all their preferences.”
It is vital to apply on time; we recommend that parents use all their preferences and list their local school as one of their preferences. Parents should also carefully consider the admissions criteria of each school for which they wish to apply.
