Councillors praise new welfare rights contract

Politics / Tue 25th Feb 2014 at 08:47am

COUNCILLORS from across the divide have praised the new welfare rights and advice contract that has been agreed by Harlow Council.

Due to legal restrictions, there was no mention made of the winners of the contract but both Labour and Conservative councillors agreed that it was a new chapter in helping the Harlow residents.

The £90,000 contract comes after a deep, bitter and expensive legal battle between the Harlow Welfare Rights Centre and Harlow Council that ended in bitter recrimination and a court battle.

Labour councillor Jean Clark was the only voice of dissent and stood up for the record of the now quasi-defunct organisation.

Councillor Russell Perrin said: “I am pleased we can close a chapter that was a mess and a burden on the Harlow taxpayer.”
