LAST Saturday The Herts and Essex community Farm project took its first tentative steps toward becoming a fully-fledged community farm. Organiser Elliott and a handful of volunteers, of all ages, elliott spent five hours clearing the Foldcroft site of brambles and other debris.

The ex-allotment site in Foldcroft had become overgrown during the wet winter and hidden amongst the brambles were a few surprises as volunteers removed years of fly-tipping from the land. A bath tub, kitchen sink and a fridge were among the objects to be removed. Unsurprising given its proximity to Canons Brook Golf course, volunteers, also unearthed around a hundred golf balls and even a couple of golf clubs.

Removal of the thick bramble was helped massively by Garma landscaping who supplied a tractor to remove the majority of the shoulder high bramble, leaving the remaining brambles to be removed the old fashioned way by hand. Garma landscaping have also offered to help rotivate the land, which will be done as soon as the land has dried out from the recent rainfall. The day itself was blessed with mild early spring weather, despite the need for wellies. Volunteers cleared the brambles from the land and piled them high for removal, whilst others dug a slowworm shelter. Once this stage is complete and the land has been cleared it was hoped the land would be ready for the planting of fruits and vegetables and eventually chicken and bee keeping.

The project will be running at the Foldcroft site on the first Saturday of every month and all are invited to come along and get involved, other events are also being planned for the future including; tree planting, building raised beds, building a chicken house, children’s/educational area and more.

The project is looking for volunteers of all ages who want to get involved with the project from the beginning, if you are interested in getting your hands dirty or just want to keep up to date with the project please check out their Facebook page.
