Harlow 12 v 36 Campionharlowcamp

HARLOW were outpaced on Saturday in their match against league leaders Campions. They produced some good phases of play and in the final quarter put the visitors under a lot of pressure, crossing the try-line once and coming close on several occasions. By that stage however Campion were 30 points clear. The thing that really let Harlow down was tackling. Too often it was only at the third attempt that a player was stopped and with good fast support running by the opposition tries were inevitable.

From the kick off Harlow took play into the Campion half but lost possession and a strong counter attack saw them back into their own 22 where two missed tackles conceded an easy try in the corner. It looked as if they had made up for the error when two minutes later Harlow full back Rob Mackie used his pace to break through for a try, leveling the score at 5 points all. For the next ten minutes Harlow put the visitors under a lot of pressure and twice came close to scoring but then when Campion countered the same poor tackling allowed them a try almost identical to their first.

Harlow failed to take advantage of a penalty opportunity but the game was a cut and thrust affair with Harlow having a good share of ball and territory until the final six minutes of the half when Campion ran in two tries one of them converted. One of them was really well set up and would have beaten any defence at this level but the other could have been stopped if Harlow had defended as well as they had in recent weeks. The half ended at 5 – 22 to the visitors.

The second half started badly with Harlow conceding another converted try in the first five minutes of the half. After that however despite playing up the slope they performed somewhat better and had a reasonable share of the possession. On 62 minutes however they conceded another converted try taking the score to 5 – 36. The final quarter was by long way the best of the match for Harlow. The attacked strongly with ball in hand and made a number of good assaults on the try line. Grimley and Mackie came close and then finally it was Jamie Fricker who outpaced the outside center and winger to touch down near the corner. Knightley converted taking the score to 12 – 36. In the closing minutes Harlow kept up the pressure and McMullen and Grimley both came close but the game ended with no further score.

This drops Harlow to 8th place in the league. They are in action at home next Saturday to 5th placed Upminster in a game which was cancelled during the January flooding. The match kicks off at 3pm, spectators are welcome and admission is free. After that match they have played all the higher placed clubs and are due to play the bottom three to complete their campaign. They should be able to get a result from this but clubs fighting off relegation can always be a problem.
