HARLOW AC athlete, Naomi Harryman, competed at the England Athletics Indoor Championships held in Sheffield on Saturday 8 March.
She lined up against the very best pentahletes in the UK at U17, as this championship incorporated the Welsh and Northern Irish championships too.
Naomi, 15, missed being crowned U17 English Champion by the narrowest of margins, just 14 points. However, finishing second stretched her club record points total to 3469 points: in combined events terms this is incredibly close and the third placed competitor was nearly 200 points further back.
Naomi was lying in second place after a fantastic 60m hurdles in 9.15s. She then went on to win the high jump with a massive jump of 1.65m meaning she led after two events. The shot, her weakest event largely due to her smaller stature in relation to her competitors, was next. She still managed to throw a decent distance of 8.19m equating to tenth for this event and narrowly holding on to second place. This was followed by a brilliant personal best in the long jump of 5.52m; now just 41 points behind the leader going into the dreaded 800m. Despite running a PB of 2.31.29m and winning the race by 5 seconds, bringing the whole stadium to their feet, it wasn’t quite enough to overhaul the deficit.
Speaking after Naomi said, “I was so close to being champion so I was a bit disappointed. I was pleased with my overall performance as I gave it everything. Next time I will win!”
Club representative, Steve Lott, added, “It is worth just putting a little bit of context to what Naomi has achieved. All top ten finishers achieved personal bests and 26 of the 28 competitors achieved overall best results. In effect, this has been the highest calibre of competition for this event ever. She can be very proud indeed.”
