IMPROVEMENT works to revitalise four of the county’s key town centre footway areas are already more than halfway underway.

The £1m of improvement works have already helped to revitalise a number of town centre footways in Chelmsford, Colchester, Harlow and Basildon, helping to create an improved shopping experience for local residents, business and visitors to the county.

Works have already been completed in Chelmsford and Harlow town centres with Colchester and Basildon to follow. All works will be completed by 30th April.

Significant works carried out include:

Pedestrian-friendly footways treated with asphalt surfacing to improve its condition and replacement of defective slabs
Replacement of guard rails for safety
Replacement of deteriorating street furniture.

The improvement works are specifically targeting busy town centre locations in need of refurbishment due to heavy footfalls.

Initial works began at Chelmsford high street on December 9, followed by Colchester and Harlow on January 22. Basildon improvement works began on February 17.

All works are planned to be completed before 30th April 2014 – weather permitting.

County Councillor Rodney L Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “These essential works are a demonstration of our commitment to provide footways that Essex residents deserve. There will be some temporary disruptions while works are ongoing so please be patient. The benefit far outweighs these minimal disruptions.”

Works will generally be carried out Monday to Friday during normal working hours from 8am to 5pm and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays in Basildon. Delays to traffic will be minimal and workers will keep noise to a minimum. Some overnight works will also be carried out to ease congestion.
