THE announcement of planned improvements on the Greater Anglia train services is good news for commuters, says Essex County Council.

Abellio Greater Anglia has today (16 April) pledged to deliver service improvements across its franchise area as part of an extension to its contract with the Department for Transport.

The announcement includes the major refurbishment of intercity trains used on the Great Eastern Main Line (which runs between Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, Chelmsford and London), including improvements to seats, lighting and toilet facilities. An additional 1600 standard seats are also being provided on weekday intercity services on the Great Eastern Main Line.

County Councillor Rodney L Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transportation said: “The announcement of these small but welcome improvements to train services in Essex is good news for local commuters. We will continue to work with the Parliamentary Rail Taskforce to make the case for reduced journey times, long term capacity provision on the Great Eastern and West Anglia Main Lines to meet predicted growth in Essex, and significant upgrades to rolling stock.”
