Libraries looking for young volunteers

News / Fri 2nd May 2014 at 11:29am

ESSEX Libraries are recruiting for young volunteers aged 14 and over to support library staff with the Summer Reading Challenge 2014. This year the challenge is ‘Mythical Maze’.

The role of a volunteer is to encourage children and young people to read and to talk to them about the books they are reading. Students aged 14 and over can use this opportunity to gain work experience within their community and their volunteering hours can contribute to schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Students will gain vital workplace skills and experience, have a lot of fun and really make a difference to the children they are working with.

Essex Libraries are looking for volunteers who can provide a minimum of 15 hours. They can usually volunteer in their nearest library. Application forms and more details can be found at www.essex.gov.uk/libraries, click on volunteering with libraries followed by Summer Reading Challenge volunteer. The closing date for applications is 23rd May.

Councillor Mick Page, Deputy Cabinet Member for Libraries said: “We need more young volunteers to support the Summer Reading Challenge. Young people taking part will gain valuable skills and work experience, have lots of fun and it looks great on the CV too.”
