Two dead in multiple accident on M11 near Harlow

Police officers continue to investigate the double fatal crash on the northbound M11 near jct 8 at Birchanger and any witnesses who have not contacted them are asked to help officers by speaking with the investigation team.

The two people who died are believed to be a 53 year old man from the Netherlands and a 45 year old woman from Kent, who were brother and sister. Their family has been informed but they have not been formally identified.

They were in a Toyota car that was struck by other vehicles and collided with the rear of a Mercedes horse box, with five horses on board. The car caught light with the impact and sadly the occupants died at the scene.

Two people were taken to hospital. The 49 year old driver of a Jaguar car from Romford received head injuries and remains under observation at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and his passenger, a 23 year old woman from Cyprus, who was catching a flight from Stansted Airport, was flown by air ambulance and remains in Addenbrooke’s hospital at this time. The drivers of a lorry, the horsebox and a Vauxhall van received minor injuries.

The driver of a lorry was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The 49 year old man from Stafford, Staffs was questioned and later released on police bail until September 15 while enquiries continue.

Update: 1735 hrs

TWO people have died in a serious collision involving five vehicles on the M11 in Essex this afternoon. A man has been arrested.

The collision occurred around 2.15pm on the northbound carriageway between junctions 7-8 Harlow to Bishops Stortford/Stansted Airport involving a lorry, horse box and three cars.

The carriageway is completely blocked and is impassable. The road will remain closed throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternate routes.

Two people in a car have died and the driver and passenger in another car have been taken to hospital in Cambridgeshire. A woman has serious internal injuries and was flown by air ambulance and a man was taken by ambulance with a head injury.

Police are in the process of identifying the people who have died and the seriously injured woman to contact their next of kin.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and will be taken to a police station for questioning.

Harlow – Second Avenue (A1025) slow moving Eastbound to A414 London Road.

Sawbridgeworth – A1184 Harlow Road – Slow moving traffic northbound from Edinburgh Way A414 to Station Road.

Harlow A414 – London Road – Slow moving traffic in both directions between M11 J7 (Hastingwood Interchange) and Edinburgh Way.

Update: 1610 hrs

M11 Northbound – J7 to J8 likely to stay closed for several hours. Southbound has reopened.

Update: Police Advisory

Very serious crash on the M11 northbound in Essex between junctions 7 at Harlow and 8 which is the Bishops Stortford and Stansted Airport junction. Road is closed northbound and very slow southbound.

Motorist are advised to avoid the area and plan alternate routes.

Incident: 1600 hrs

M11 Essex – Slow traffic on M11 southbound between J8, A120 (Stansted Airport) and J7, A414 (Harlow), because of people slowing to look at an accident. All lanes have been re-opened.

M11 Essex, northbound between A414 [M11 junction 7] and A120 [M11 junction 8]

M11 Essex – M11 closed and long delays northbound between J7, A414 (Harlow) and J8, A120 (Stansted Airport), because of a serious accident involving two cars, a van and a horsebox. Tailbacks for two miles. Diversion in operation – the official diversion is via the A414 through Harlow, A10 to Puckeridge, then the A120. This route is becoming very congested.

M11 Essex – M11 closed and queueing traffic southbound between J8, A120 (Stansted Airport) and J7, A414 (Harlow).
