Harlow-born star Rik Mayall dies aged 56

rikHARLOW-born comedian and actor Rik Mayall has died aged 56, according to his management team.

Rik Mayall was born in Matching Tye near Harlow in 1958.

Mayall, the second of four children, was born in Harlow to John and Gillian Mayall. He had an older brother, Anthony, and two younger sisters, Libby and Kate.

When Mayall was three years old, he and his parents—who taught drama—moved to Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, where he spent the rest of his childhood and performed in his parents’ plays.

He played the obnoxious, poetry-writing anarchist Rick in The Young Ones alongside his friend Adrian Edmondson before the duo later went on to star in their sitcom Bottom.

Mayall also appeared in shows including Blackadder and The New Statesman.

He was left seriously ill after a quad bike accident in 1998 which left him in a coma for several days.

The actor, who was married with three children, died at home in London.

Mayall’s film roles included the comedies Drop Dead Fred and Guest House Paradiso.
