THE Council put on a Demystifying European Funding workshop in partnership with the Horizon 2020 office in Brussels. About 100 business people from Essex businesses attended the event last week.

Speakers included the East of England European Partnership office which explained how companies can identify the most relevant area of funding to bid for, how to identify partners, how the payments work, how to think outside the box and get projects to fit into funding descriptions and how match funding works.

Four Essex companies, an SME and three established companies, who have successfully bid for funding, shared their experiences of successfully applying for funding and tips for successful applications.

About one third of businesses who attended said they felt they had a product or service that they felt was ready for funding support.

Some companies signed up for business development programmes offered by the Essex University and Anglia Ruskin University and the Essex Innovation Programme, which is run by Essex County Council.

Businesses also signed up to a bid development workshop is taking place on Thursday 3 July, run by Essex County Council’s Funding and Investment Team, to help businesses who want to access funding with practical support.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure, said: “This is an example of Essex County Council giving positive support to innovative businesses in Essex.

“Sometimes European funding can seem like a bit of a maze, but with Essex County Council able to guide you through it, you can often access a vital source of money which boosts individual businesses and the county’s economy.”
