SEVERAL illegal encampments are causing a significant frustration for residents.

Harlow Council has confirmed there are currently 4 illegal encampments across the town.

Essex Police are working with Harlow Council to remove the caravans but the situation is becoming more serious as the number of caravans parked illegally on Council land has increased overnight.

Councillor Andrew Johnson, Leader of Harlow Conservatives said:

“The frequency of large illegal encampments pitching up across the town is now a serious problem.

Labour are wrong to just blame Essex Police and the Government, as community leaders it is their responsibility to co-ordinate efforts between enforcement agencies to tackle and prevent the spread of illegal encampments across the town. Local enforcement officers are now struggling to cope with the doubling in size of some encampments. Local taxpayers will now have to foot the bill to clear up the mess Labour could have prevented.”

Cllr Joel Charles, Deputy Leader of Harlow Conservatives added:

“The Administration failed to learn lessons from recent problems with illegal encampments which have only made matters worse. Harlow is now seen as a soft touch on illegal encampments because of their total lack of leadership

It is also clear that Labour have failed to fund measures to protect Council land. Under the previous Conservative Administration, we replaced locks on gates to open spaces owned by the Council and dug trenches to prevent access.”
