Travellers return to Howard Way

Politics / Fri 25th Jul 2014 at 12:10pm

gyphowGYPSY-travellers have returned to Howard Way in Harlow.

The group of over a dozen vehicles camped in the early hours of Friday morning.

Harlow Council have told YH that they are aware of the situation.

Harlow Council Community Safety Officers have visited the site this morning (25 July 2014) and have served the travellers with a direction to leave the land on or before Monday at 10am. If they do not leave on Monday morning the Council will issue County Court proceedings.

There is also still an encampment of 14 caravans on Katherine’s Way; this is Essex County Council’s land. The County Council issued proceedings into the County Court on Wednesday 23 July 2014 and has obtained a hearing date of Wednesday 30 July 2014.

Leader of Harlow Council, Councillor Jon Clempner, said: “As we have said before the residents of Harlow expect us to take action to move illegal encampments on and we are. We are seeking to issue court summonses as soon as possible where directions to leave Council land are not met. We are also continuing to work with Essex County Council, the Police and legal experts to find a long-term solution to illegal encampments across the town. The Council has also written to the Government and the Association of Police Officers requesting an urgent review of Council powers and associated guidance.

“Once again I apologise to residents that more cannot be said at this point but rest assured we are exploring every legal avenue to find a solution.”

I wonder if this is the same lot that have been moving around Harlow for the past few months. So, another couple of weeks here and by that time Latton Common or Katherines will be nice and clean so they can just pop on down there. How much will it cost to clean up this site then?
