East HertsVISITOR’S to East Herts Council car parks in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertford and Ware will be able to park free for 30 minutes from early September after East Herts Council’s Executive agreed last night (Tuesday August 5) to implement free short stay parking.

As part of its ambition to increase the vibrancy of the district’s town centres, 30 minutes’ free parking will be introduced in most car parks, adding to the free bays on street and increasing availability and convenience. Motorists needing to park for more than half an hour will receive more parking time for the same price. The cost of the giveaway will be met from council contingency funds.

A new tariff was also agreed for those wishing to park longer than the free 30 minutes in the late afternoon. From 4pm to 6.30pm motorists will be able to park for just £1, so popping into town after work or picking the children up from school will also become easier.

In addition to the introduction of free parking, the Executive agreed, after consultation, to halt the proposed extension of the flat rate £1 charge beyond 6.30pm.

The changes are designed to last for two years, during which time the council will be exploring options to replace the current pay and display machines, which are nearing the end of their working life. An interim review is scheduled for June 2015.

Paul Phillips, Executive member for economic development, said: “The introduction of free parking is great news for shoppers, retailers and visitors to our towns. East Herts Council carried out extensive consultation and listened to what everyone said before making a decision. We hope that these changes will provide a real boost to the economy of our town centres.”
