FORGreen Flag Award the sixth year in a row the town’s Parndon Wood Nature Reserve has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag, which officially recognises it as one of the best kept green spaces in the country.

Parndon Wood Nature Reserve is among a record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces that has received the national award handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. The Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 volunteer experts who visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

The Nature Reserve is maintained by Harlow Council and volunteers with local organisation ECCO managing the Conservation Centre and running community activities as part of a partnership agreement.

Councillor Jon Clempner, Leader of Harlow Council, said: “This is an excellent achievement for Parndon Wood Nature Reserve. To carry on achieving such high standards year-on-year is testament to the hard work of Council Officers and the many volunteers who help maintain the reserve and ECCO. Every year hundreds of children and families take part in community events at the reserve organised by ECCO, which plays a vital role in improving people’s health and wellbeing. This Award recognises and highlights that people in Harlow continue to benefit from a green open space of the very highest quality.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.

“A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.

“Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
